A commitment to service, advocacy, and credit union ideals earned the former VSECU CEO this national honor

MONTPELIER, VT, MAY 17, 2016 — VSECU, a member-owned cooperative and not for profit credit union for everybody in Vermont, today announced that its former CEO Steven Post was named the 2016 Credit Union Hero of the Year by Credit Union National Association’s (CUNA) Credit Union Magazine. The national recognition is awarded to one individual each year who is found to exemplify the credit union industry’s philosophy of “people helping people.”

Post served in positions of increasing responsibility at VSECU for 24 years, filling the role of CEO from 1990 until his retirement in 2014. Under his leadership, the credit union grew from $80 million in assets to more than $600 million, and expanded its membership to 50,000.
“In an industry that’s filled with heroes working to better the lives of members, communities, and the industry each and every day, I’m honored to receive this designation,” said Post. “I’m proud to have helped grow and evolve VSECU during my time with the organization, and to witness its ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of others.”

The annual award recognizes credit union professionals with a record of service, advocacy, and a demonstrated commitment to the movement’s ideals. In its selection of Post, Credit Union Magazine cited his service to others, collaborative leadership style, and advocacy on behalf of the industry. Post was one of four finalists, and was selected for the top honor through an online vote amongst Credit Union Magazine readers, in one of its most competitive contests to date.

“Staff and colleagues describe Steve as a visionary, someone always looking to better members’ lives—through services, new technologies, or financial counseling,” says Ann Hayes Peterson, CUNA’s vice president and editor in chief. “In our minds, he’s an ideal Credit Union Hero, and we celebrate the difference he has made throughout his membership and the entire credit union movement.”

“Steve is most deserving of this designation, having helped create VSECU’s strong foundation and establish an extraordinary track record for delivering meaningful value to members,” said Rob Miller, current CEO of VSECU. “We’re excited to build upon that foundation through our vision to empower possibilities, as we continue to create unique value for members through cooperative financial services and beyond.”

Approximately 54 percent of all Vermonters belong to at least one credit union in Vermont. One contributing factor has been increasing consumer access to these types of financial cooperatives. During his leadership tenure, Post worked with a variety of stakeholders and policymakers to ensure that all Vermonters had access to financial alternatives. Association of Vermont Credit Union President Joe Bergeron commented that, “in addition to being a hero to his own credit union’s members, Steve’s contributions and leadership on numerous legislative and regulatory issues during his time on the Association Board and Government Relations Committee, greatly benefited all Vermont credit unions, and Vermont consumers. Our Association family proudly congratulates Steve on this well-deserved national recognition.”

Post is the ninth annual recipient of this prestigious award and now joins other hall of fame cooperative leaders previously recognized for their leadership from around the country. Post will officially be recognized as the 2016 Credit Union Hero of the Year during the America’s Credit Union Conference in Seattle in June.
